Press Plus - Press+ - How To Get Rid Of Those Annoying Pop Ups Without Paying

Press plus has tried to up their game yet again - changing the code they use to block you from accessing your favorite news site without paying their ransom. Of course, this ransom is in addition to the 50+ ads the news agencies some how manage to cram onto a single web page. Well, Hacky's here to help you take care of both of these issues with the click of a few buttons. Note: I'm assume both Internet Explorer and Firefox have similar solutions, but have not tested them. These instructions are based on using the Chrome browser.

Chrome is a great browser. As a developer, I use a lot of the tools and extensions available through chrome to inspect a lot of the work I do. In my experience, one of the best free extensions is called 'AdBlock' (and by free, I mean legitimately free...not 'free', but you have to give them your email, or  'free', but you have to their download spyware, but actually free.) AdBlock acts like a customizable firewall for Ads, Spam, and other internet garbage. It proactively protects you from known ads reported by other users, but also allows you to customize when/where/who displays ads on a website by website basis. Hacky gives the AdBlock extension 2 thumbs way up!

Setup takes a few seconds, is entirely legal, and you'll be back to enjoying your favorite news sites without paying the press plus (or Press+) fees, and you'll never have to deal with the press+ annoying popups again. Without further adieu, here's:

Hacky's Visual Guide To Getting Rid Of Press Plus (Press+) Pop Ups or Accessing Your Favorite News Site Without Paying Press Plus Fees

Step 1: To Block Press+, first we click on the menu button in the upper right corner in chrome and click settings.

Step 2: Click on the Extension Tab on the left side of the page.

Step 3: I'm not sure why, but to chrome seems to like to make it hard for you to find where to add chrome extensions. It's all the way at the bottom of the page under "Extension". Click the 'Get more extensions' link.

Step 4: It's deceptive, because it says 'store', but I can assure you, the extension is 100% free. Locate the search bar under 'chrome web store' and search 'AdBlock'.

Step 5: Under Extensions (Not Apps!!) - Click the 'Ad To Chrome' link.

Step 6: The extension should now be available under the "Extensions" link we clicked in Step 2. Make sure the extension is enabled by clicking the enable box.

Step 7: AdBlock will now be installed and you'll be able to see it next to the close button for chrome. Right-click the AdBlock icon to open the menu.

Step 8: When press plus pop up blocks you from viewing the page you want to see, select the 'Block an ad on this page' from the AdBlock menu.

Step 9: Click on the press pass pop up, and then AdBlock shows you this screen...confirming what you want to block. Click "Looks good".

Step 10: We're almost done. Press pass not only has the annoying pop up, they also canvas (or overlay) the screen so it's harder to read. No big deal. We just repeat what we did in Step 8. Click the adblock menu, select 'Block an ad on this page' , and click on any area of the screen that is veiled. To make sure you clicked the right thing, you can see by the top red arrow below, we want to block the 'pressplusOverlay'. Click 'Block It!'

Step 11: That's it! Enjoy your ad-free, cost-free internet viewing experience. Any questions, feel free to leave a comment below.

Cheers,

Hacky
